“I think I’ll take one of those sour cream apple bars, Billie.” I bit my lower lip as I eyed the selections. “And a pain au chocolat, of course.”

“Of course,” Billie said with a roll of her eyes. She had a tendency to make comments about refined sugars and what they did to the metabolism, but I ignored her. She worked in a bakery, after all. “Is this the boyfriend? Heard you had one who didn’t immediately combust, drop off a limb, lose his mind, or run away to become a monk. Also heard the sheriff pulled you in last night because you guys were having sex on the sidewalk.”

“What? No!” I shot a look at Finch, who stood next to me texting someone. “We did no such thing.”

“Yeah? Well, word on the street is that you were all over a tall, dark, British dude last night.” Billie stuffed my choices into a small paper bag and slapped them down with undue force on the counter, giving Finch an overly warm stare to which, fortunately, he was oblivious.

“I’m not British,” Finch said, not looking up from his texting. “I simply sound as if I were.”

“Jeremy will have a lemon ginger scone,” I told Billie, pinning her back with a look that I hope made several points about people who ogled other people’s nooky partners. “And a cream cheese brownie.”

“You’re going to explode if you eat all that sugar,” Billie told me, but stuffed the requested items into the bag.

“I said they were for Fi—Jeremy.” I waved my hand toward him. “Not me.”

“Dude,” she said in a drawling tone that made my back itch. “That man has clearly never had a refined carb in his life.”

Finch said nothing.

I glared at him.

Why are you annoyed? She’s not wrong, he said.

No, but you don’t need to stand there looking so gorgeous and sexy and non-carb-eating when some of us have to keep our blood factory going.

Finch shot me a questioning look. Are you feeling unwell? Did I take too much this morning? You said there was no pain, but perhaps you weren’t up to feeding me after last night.

I’m fine, just hungry, and felt I deserved a bit of sugar after our sexual calisthenics. “He very much does eat, thank you. Oh, and two lattes, please. One decaf, and one...er...” I glanced at Finch.

He cocked an eyebrow at me, then said, “Please make mine without caffeine as well.”

I smiled.

You cannot have caffeine?

Nope. I have a thing with my esophagus that means no caffeine.

Billie looked like she wanted to argue with me, but after one last, overly-long look at Finch, bustled over to the coffee machine, and made the lattes.

“Do you mind if I poke through Ozy’s stuff?” I asked a half hour later, when we were back at his shop, and I had consumed both coffees and the treats.

“I don’t mind, but I assure you that I saw nothing out of the ordinary when I packed the boxes,” he answered, eyeing the basement door.
